Our Top 5 Ethical Skincare Brands

So many creams; so many chemicals. Picking skincare products is an operation of great skill and even greater frustration – you tip-toe your way across a minefield of unnatural ingredients to find yourself at the other side having put everything you picked up back down on the shelves. You know that the good, ethical skincare you desire is out there somewhere, but how are you supposed to find it amongst all the parabens, phthalates, and other synthetics lurking in the serums?

Dominik Martin 3Thankfully, you’ve got us to help you shop sustainably – we’ve narrowed down the options to our top 5 environmentally friendly skincare products. They’re all from companies who recognise the need for natural, ethical, good-for-us ingredients in the stuff we put on our skin.

Green People puts nature and science in balance, and has been packing its products with over 90% active natural and organic ingredients since 1997. It’s a company that really cares: Charlotte began the company looking for a way to soothe her daughter’s eczema and allergies. She was stubbornly principled from the start, and in 1999 was involved in setting natural and organic cosmetic standards with the help of the Soil Association.

Green People has over 100 certified organic products for everyone including those with treatable skin conditions. Start off with Day Solution SPF15 day cream, with organic Aloe Vera, Hemp, Jojoba, Green Tea, and Chamomile.

Farmers2.     FARMERS’ Welsh Lavender

Beginning on a whim in mid Wales, 2003, FARMERS’ creams and balms are inspired by the labours of Welsh hill farmers. Brought to being by a journalist and a philosophy teacher, respectively, the creams are made and packaged here in Wales and are becoming ever more recognised nationally.

FARMERS’ products are not tested on animals, and use naturally derived ingredients. The skincare range is made with Welsh lavender grown in rich, red soil, and is neatly packaged in British-made aluminium jars. Try the Farmers’ Hand Cream, made with lavender oil distilled in the hills of mid Wales, with the refreshing scents of peppermint and rosemary.

Neals-Yard-logo3.     Neal’s Yard Remedies

Neal’s Yard Remedies have been creating organic, natural health & beauty products since 1981. Over the years, their skincare ranges have been recognised by the Soil Association and BUAV, and as the first CarbonNeutral high street retailer, the company planted 700 native trees and shrubs for the Woodland Trust’s Diamond Jubilee in Peacemarsh, Dorset, in 2012.

Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare is cruelty-free, meaning it isn’t tested on animals and it meets Humane Cosmetics Standards so your conscience can be as clean as your skin. Relax with the Warming Salve, which contains ginger and juniper essential oils, beeswax, lavender oil, and St John’s wort extract amongst other ingredients (all organically produced) by massaging into your aching muscles and joints.

Laidbare logo4.     Laidbare

Laidbare focusses on naturally inspired beauty. The brand was born in 2006 when Sarah coupled up with her mother-in-law to establish Touch My Face Ltd, and later created Laidbare to offer real value and natural ingredients.

Laidbare is sold by Touch My Face alongside big international brands, and is holding its own in the ethical skincare market. The products help restore skin to a healthy, clean, and clear state with their natural ingredients. Pack Your Bags, Lighten & Tighten Eye Cream is filled with buckwheat wax, shea butter, coconut, and almond, and is great for ridding the windows to your soul of their puffiness, dark circles, and redness, and for hydrating dry patches.

laughing_bird_logo_3005.     Laughing Bird

Laughing Bird uses traditional production methods to put together its wholesome skincare products in the village of Sling, North Wales. The story began in the mid-1980s whilst working for herbalists G Baldwin & Co, but it really took off in 2004 when Helen’s parents decided to sell their farmhouse, providing the business with its natural home.

Laughing Bird is a truly home-grown affair, using milk from the four Anglo Nubian goats roaming in the meadow, honey and beeswax from two beehives in the garden, and beneficial herbs such as mint and rosemary grown right on the farm alongside ethical and sustainable international ingredients. Shea & Cocoa Butter Body Cream with Lavender and Camomile is rich with oils and butters and will leave you feeling calmed, nourished, and relaxed.
